About Myers Middle School
The school is named after abolitionists
Stephen and Harriet Myers, who lived in Albany from the
1830s through the 1850s. The Myerses played an important
role in helping hundreds of African-Americans gain
freedom in the Albany area via the Underground Railroad.

Constructed in 2005 through the City
School District of Albany’s facilities project, Myers
Middle School is a modern three-story, 140,000-square
foot facility. The school contains 24 general-education
classrooms, six special-education classrooms, six
science rooms with prep space, cutting-edge technology
classrooms, modern family and consumer science
classrooms, two art classrooms with kiln and storage and
music, choral and band room.

Eighth-grader Arielle King, the Myers student
goverment president, received a New York State
Communit Distinction award on Feb 7. (MORE)

District employee and students earn human rights kudos
--
The Albany Human Rights
Commission recognized three district students
and a district employee on Feb. 1 at a
special public ceremony at City Hall.
Receiving kudos were Albany High School
psychologist Liz Gialanella, Ph.D., Jamie Curcio, an
eighth-grader at William S. Hackett Middle School,
Jaden Tesch, a third-grader at New Scotland
Elementary School and Tamera Thomas, a sixth-grader
at Stephen and Harriet Myers Middle School. (MORE)

Award-winning author to visit Feb. 9
-- Sharon G. Flake, author of Money Hungry and The Skin
I'm In, will visit the library 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9 as
part of the school's Black History Month celebration. Flake has
written several fiction and non-fiction books geared toward urban
youth, including You Don't Even Know Me and Poems About
Boys. She will speak to students about their writing and answer
questions. The library also will host a writing contest and raffle
with a prize of an autographed book. Flake also will visit Albany
High School and William S. Hackett Middle School that day.

Student government president wins essay
contest -- Arielle King, Myers'
student government president, is a winner of the
Black History Month Creative Expressions
Contest sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
Inc. Arielle will tape a public service announcement
that will be aired on local television stations
during February. She also will be one of the
featured winners at an Awards and Recognition
Ceremony on Feb. 12 at Myers.

Absence from school
If your child is
absent from school for any reason, call the school at
475-6425 during the morning, and provide a written
excuse when your child returns to school.
Middle-school enrollment -- Myers feeder schools
The City
School District of Albany uses a feeder
enrollment model for middle-school students. Students from designated elementary schools
are assigned to either Myers
Middle School or
William S. Hackett Middle School. Each school has about 650 students.
Students in the elementary
program at North
Albany Academy continue on in that school's
middle-level program, which serves about 150
students in grades 6-8.
