Motivated by a memory

Big 10 champs for the second year in a row and ranked among the top teams in New York state, the Albany High School girls' basketball team is looking ahead to big things in the postseason, which begins with a Section II Class AA quarterfinal game at home Friday, Feb. 24. Yet, coach Kelly Haggerty-MacNabb and her players still are motivated by a difficult memory during what has been the Lady Falcons' best season in 14 years. (MORE)

Natasia Brown flying through indoor track season

Albany High School junior Natasia Brown is flying through the indoor track season this winter.

Brown won the 55 meters and was a member of the winning 300-meter relay team at the Great Dane Classic on Feb. 12 at the University at Albany.

The team captain, she also was a three-time gold-medal winner at the Big 10 championships on Jan. 28. She won the 55 meters at that event and also joined the victorious 200- and 400-meter relay teams to help the Lady Falcons to a second-place finish overall.

Active in a variety of school and volunteer activities, Brown also participated Feb. 9 in a student focus group about the qualities and characteristics the Board of Education should be seeking in the City School District of Albany's next superintendent. (MORE)

Spring sports sign-ups through Feb. 17 for modified teams

Students can sign up through Friday, Feb. 17 to play modified spring sports (grades 7-8).

All students should sign up with their physical-education teacher and see the school nurse for mandatory paperwork. You also can downloard the required forms from the Sports Physicals section. A physical within the 12 months prior to the first day of practice is required, and all paperwork must be returned to the school nurse by the end of the school day Feb. 10.

Click here to download the modified instruction form in .pdf format. You also can contact the Athletics Office for more information at 475-6310.

Director's Memo: Sports are a time commitment
Updated for the spring 2012 sports season
Sports are a time commitment.

If you are interested in participating in a varsity or junior varsity sport, please keep in mind that you are making a commitment to your team and that sport. To be fair, each player must make the commitment to be present at each practice and contest throughout the season before tryouts begin. This weighs heavily on the decisions made by coaches when they determine their rosters.

A schedule is given at the beginning of each team’s season and is also available before tryouts upon request. (MORE)
